Ambedkar Jayanti, also known as Bhim Jayanti, is observed on 14 April to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891–1956). It is one of the most significant national holidays in India, as Ambedkar was a key figure in the struggle for the rights of the oppressed sections of society (Dalits), one of the architects of the Indian Constitution, and the first Law Minister of independent India.How is Ambedkar Jayanti celebrated?
Ceremonies and Events: There are official ceremonies across India to commemorate Ambedkar. Important events are held at memorials and statues of Ambedkar, including his memorial in Delhi and the house he lived in Mumbai. People place flowers at his monuments and participate in silent processions.
Cultural and Educational Events: Lectures, seminars and exhibitions are organised to commemorate his contributions to India. Schools and universities hold essay competitions and debates on social equality and human rights.
Public processions. In major cities, especially Mumbai, where Ambedkar lived and worked, there are colourful processions and rallies. Thousands of people visit places associated with his life, such as the Chaitya Bhoomi Memorial Complex in Mumbai.
Charity. On Ambedkar Jayanti, charity events are organised where food and clothing are distributed to the needy.
Buddhist rituals. Buddhist prayers and rituals form an important part of the celebrations, especially among communities that converted to Buddhism under the influence of Ambedkar.
